President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo from office with immediate effect.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency, the removal was carried out in line with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution. The decision followed a petition filed by a Ghanaian citizen, Mr Daniel Ofori, which prompted the establishment of a committee under Article 146(6) to investigate the matter.
The committee, after reviewing the petition and evidence presented, concluded that grounds of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1) had been established. It subsequently recommended Justice Torkonoo’s removal from office.
“The President is required to act in accordance with the committee’s recommendation,” the statement explained.
The announcement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Spokesperson to the President, who also serves as Minister for Government Communications.
