Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has announced that President John Dramani Mahama will provide new high-occupancy buses to Metro Mass, Ayalolo and private sector transport operators to help ease congestion and augment the public transport services across the country in the medium term.
“In this vein, His Excellency the President has asked me to assure you that government will support Metro Mass, Ayalolo and private operators with new high-occupancy buses to strengthen services in the medium term,” she announced.
She made this known during a working visit to the leadership of the Ministry of Transport on Friday January 16, 2026, where she acknowledged the daily struggles passengers face, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said government is fully aware of the long queues, congestion at terminals, and cases of passenger exploitation by some drivers. She stressed that the situation is not ignored by government and should not be seen as the problem of one group alone.
She acknowledged that the transport crisis is everybody’s problem, and that is why government in collaboration with transport operators will work together to find solutions,” the Vice.
She noted that transport operators, especially in the private sector, carry a huge responsibility in moving Ghanaians to work, school, markets and other destinations. She added that government’s role is to reduce the burden on operators so they can perform their duties effectively and fairly.
The Vice President called for fairness, respect and open communication between drivers and passengers, stressing that no commuter should feel exploited. She urged transport union leaders to monitor their members closely to prevent negative behaviour that could harm passengers.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving road conditions, describing road repairs as critical to national development and access to essential services such as healthcare.
She said government is taking steps to modernise and expand public transport services to make them more affordable, safe and accessible. This includes support for both state-owned and private transport services.
She also added that processes to repair broken-down buses will be fast-tracked to ensure more vehicles return to the roads as soon as possible.
The Vice President called for continued collaboration between government and transport operators to build a transport system that prioritises fairness, efficiency and excellence, while restoring public trust in the sector.
