United States President Donald Trump has thrown the 2026 World Cup into turmoil with a provocative statement on Iran’s participation, welcoming the national team while issuing a stark warning about their safety.

“The Iran National Soccer Team is welcome to The World Cup, but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” Trump declared.

The remarks come hot on the heels of FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s optimistic update two days prior, where he claimed to have received assurances from Trump that Iran would be safe at the competition.

Infantino’s proclamation had briefly eased concerns over Iran’s qualification amid rocky U.S.-Iran relations, but Trump’s follow-up has shattered that fragile calm, leaving football officials scrambling.

This marks a historic low for the tournament: In the 96-year history of the World Cup, no host country’s president has ever openly threatened a qualified participating team.

Trump’s words represent an unprecedented blend of diplomacy and menace, turning what should be a celebration of global sport into a flashpoint for international brinkmanship.

Compounding the chaos, Iran’s sports minister Ahmad Donyamali announced on Wednesday, March 11, 2026 that the national team cannot participate following the U.S. killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Donyamali’s statement cites the assassination, allegedly carried out by U.S. forces as an insurmountable barrier, effectively sidelining Iran despite their qualification and igniting debates over FIFA’s neutrality.
