Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed government’s commitment to transforming the Ghana Prison Service through sweeping reforms aimed at modernising operations, improving officer welfare and strengthening rehabilitation systems nationwide.

Speaking at the commissioning of Officer Cadet Intake 32 in Accra, the Vice President said the reforms are designed to position the Service as a more efficient, humane and future-ready institution.

According to her, one of the flagship interventions— the 10th Prison 360 Initiative— will significantly redefine how the Service operates.

“The Prison 360 Initiative is designed to make the Ghana Prison Service a modern, secure and self-sustaining institution,” she said.
“It focuses on technology-driven operations, job creation through agriculture and manufacturing, and enterprise development that strengthens the Service and boosts national development.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the reforms also place strong emphasis on rehabilitation and reintegration, backed by the Prisons Improvement and Sustainability Fund.

“The Fund is helping us enhance skills training and expand work placement opportunities for inmates. We must ensure that rehabilitation is meaningful, dignified and effective,” she added.

A total of 265 officer cadets, comprising 162 males and 103 females, were commissioned into the Senior Officer Corps as Assistant Superintendents of Prisons. Their performance, she said, was exemplary.

“Your discipline, commitment and resilience have brought you this far. I urge you to uphold integrity, compassion and professionalism as you begin your careers,” the Vice President told the new officers.

She also praised the Director General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffour-Bonnie, for her leadership, and commended the Regimental Band for its spirited display during the parade.

Three officer cadets received special awards for outstanding performance.
