Tottenham Hotspur manager José Mourinho has confessed that he deserved his yellow card for entering the Southampton dugout to confront an ‘idiot’ on the Saints’ bench on Wednesday.

After Harry Kane had a goal ruled out for offside in the fixture – which Spurs lost 1-0 – Mourinho appeared to clash with Southampton’s goalkeeping coach Andrew Sparkes, entering the dugout to exchange words with the staff member.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho dismissed suggestions that he had taken the opportunity to peek at Southampton’s notes, but confessed that he knew he was going to be booked.

“I think the yellow card was fair because I was rude. But I was rude to an idiot,” he said. “And for some reason I was rude, but I was. And because I was rude I deserved the yellow card.”
