President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Roland Affail Monney says the Association will ensure justice is served the three Ghanaian Time Journalists assaulted by Police Officers.
He said the lack of prosecution of security officers who brutalize journalists is what has emboldened them to continue with such barbaric acts.
Speaking on GBC’s Current Affairs Programme, “Focus,” Mr. Monney expressed shock at the speed at which the Commercial Driver and Mate were arraigned before Court, on charges of assaulting a Police officer, but has failed to do same for the journalists assaulted by some Police Officers.
He said the GJA will continue to demand the protection of journalists.
Mr. Monney said two committees set up by the Police to investigate the assault on Multimedia Journalist, Latif Iddris failed to identify the perpetrators.
He said after the failure of the police to get justice for Mr. Iddris, the GJA referred the case to the National Media Commission (NMC) and for three months the case has not been called.
A Security Analyst, Adib Saani, said the number of abuses of journalists that have gone unresolved is an indication that the police are not committed to investigating such abuses and bringing the perpetrators to book to serve as a deterrent to others.
Government spokesperson, Richard Ahiagba, said the media has the power to force the IGP to act on the assault of journalists. He said the media should continue to write and speak against infractions by the police.
