Government says it will soon begin the prosecution and sanctioning of institutions that have failed to register with the Data Protection Commission. This is because it takes the issue of data protection seriously.
Addressing a cross section of the media in Accra, a Deputy Minister of Communication in charge of Data Protection, Vincent Sowah Odotei said data protection is key to the digitisation drive of the economy and to also ensure the protection and respect of the fundamental rights of individuals.
He said it is for this reason that Ghana, as the fourth country in Africa to have ratified the Malabo and the Budapest Conventions on data and protection and cyber security.
Mr. Sowah Odotei therefore called on Ghanaians and institutions to be responsible in handling both personal and institutional data.
The Executive Director of the Data Protection Commission, Patricia Adusei-Poku, said it is mandatory under the Data Protection Act of 2012, Act 843, for institutions to register with the Commission. She said a number of institutions have complied and about 100 officers from those institutions have been trained and certified.
