The Bono Regional Manager of the Rent Control Department, Ebenezer Ewusi-Wilson has stressed that it is unlawful for property owners to demand rent advance exceeding six months from potential tenants.

He said the rent Act of 1963 makes this explicitly clear, and as such going against it constitutes a crime.

He advised Landlords to register their vacant properties with the department to among other things make renting easy.

He was speaking in an interview with Radio Ghana in Sunyani.

Meanwhile, a Landlord and Surveyor, Samuel Nii Adjei Adjetey says implementation of the rent law would create problems because the cost of building materials, land documentation and workmanship are so high that the Landlord would be worse-off.

Nii Adjetey told GBC’s George Ankrah that at least one year rent would be more acceptable than the six months advanced rent payment stated in the rent law.
