The Medical Superintendent of the Mampong Government Hospital in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Kwasi Baffuor Gyimah, has denied reports that a patient died at the facility because no vehicle was available to transfer the person to Kumasi for further treatment.

Speaking in an interview with correspondent Nicholas Osei-Wusu, Dr. Gyimah said he was unaware of any emergency referral beyond the hospital’s treatment capacity during the period mentioned in the report.

He explained that, as head of the hospital, he would have approved and monitored any such referral and also informed officials of the receiving facility, in this case the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, ahead of the patient’s arrival.

Dr. Gyimah was reacting to claims made by a television presenter on Monday, May 11, 2026, that a critically ill patient died after the National Ambulance Service allegedly failed to provide an ambulance for referral from the Mampong Government Hospital last weekend.

The presenter reportedly linked the situation to a burst tyre on the only ambulance serving the municipality.

However, Dr. Gyimah dismissed the claim and said the incident was unrelated to the hospital.

According to him, protocol requires hospital authorities to contact the receiving hospital during emergency referrals to ensure preparations are made for the patient’s arrival, but no such process took place during the period in question.

The Mampong Municipal Director of the National Ambulance Service, Godfred Boateng, also supported the hospital’s position.

He admitted that the service faces operational challenges, but stated that his office did not receive any emergency referral request from the hospital that was later rejected.
