Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has called on Metro Mass Transit Limited to become financially self-sustaining and use its internally generated funds to expand operations and purchase more buses instead of depending on government support.
Speaking during the commissioning of 100 new Isuzu buses in Accra on Friday, May 22, 2026, the minister said the new buses mark the beginning of a broader transformation agenda for the transport sector and challenged Metro Mass to build the capacity to grow independently.
Addressing the gathering in the presence of the Vice President, Mr. Nikpe said government does not want a situation where it must constantly look for partnerships to provide buses for the state transport company.
“We want Metro Mass to use internally generated funds to expand operations and acquire additional buses,” he stated.
According to the minister, efficient management of the newly commissioned buses will be critical in ensuring that the company becomes financially stronger and capable of investing in future growth.
He stressed the need for internal restructuring within Metro Mass to improve staff welfare and motivate workers to deliver their best performance.
Mr. Nikpe also urged drivers and operational staff to manage the buses responsibly so that within the next two to three years, the company would be in a position to add more buses through its own efforts.
“That is our challenge to you: prove that you have the capability to transform the organization,” he said.
The Transport Minister commended Metro Mass management and staff for their efforts and assured them of continued government support and collaboration to strengthen public transport services.
He further expressed confidence that ongoing improvements across transport agencies would help move Ghana’s transport industry to a higher level and improve mobility for citizens across the country.
The 100 new Isuzu buses are expected to strengthen public transportation services and support efforts to improve transportation for commuters nationwide.
