A military-escorted convoy shielding approximately 140 civilians through Ghana’s volatile Upper East Region became the target of a high-stakes ambush on Monday, leaving three civilians and seven assailants dead. The attack occurred at Binduri as the group traveled the critical route from Bawku toward Bolgatanga. Unknown gunmen opened fire on the vehicles multiple times, resulting in a bloody confrontation and one additional civilian injury.

Military Response and Pursuit

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) personnel guarding the convoy engaged the attackers immediately. Soldiers mounted a swift response to repel the gunfire and protect the civilian passengers. Military officials confirmed that the swift counter-action prevented further civilian loss of life.

“In the process the military successfully repelled the attack on the convoy, resulting in the death of 7 assailants,” the statement said.

Recovery of Weapons and Arrests

Following the initial firefight, security forces conducted a pursuit of the fleeing gunmen. Soldiers tracked one individual to a local religious structure to recover high-grade weaponry.

“In pursuit, the military discovered and retrieved from an escapee who went to a mosque, a G3 automatic rifle, 2 filled magazines of 20 rounds each and 176 rounds of additional ammunition,” the statement, signed by Acting GAF PRO, Captain Veronica Arhin, noted.

Security forces have since apprehended 10 suspects in connection with the ambush. These individuals are currently in custody and are assisting authorities with ongoing investigations.

Escalating Tensions in the Bawku Enclave

This latest incident highlights the persistent and fragile security situation in the Upper East Region. Despite continuous security interventions, the Bawku enclave remains a flashpoint for violence, often fueled by long-standing chieftaincy disputes and ethnic tensions that have simmered for decades. The region, which borders Burkina Faso and Togo, has seen a rise in insecurity that officials fear could be exploited by extremist elements active in the Sahel. The ambush marks a significant escalation in the targeting of protected civilian movements.

Military Warning and Condolences

The GAF issued a stern warning to the public regarding interference with official security duties. The military emphasized that such actions jeopardize the safety of both personnel and civilians.

“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to caution all to desist from engaging the military or any other security service during its operations,” the statement said.

The military leadership also extended condolences to the families of the three deceased civilians. Officials expressed their hope for a speedy recovery for the survivor injured during the attack. The GAF maintains that it will continue its efforts to stabilize the region despite the renewed aggression.

Regional Security Implications

The surge in violence along this critical transit corridor poses a significant challenge to regional stability and the safe movement of goods and people. The Upper East Region is home to a diverse population of over 1.3 million people, and prolonged instability threatens the economic integration of the border zones. As investigators work to identify the motives behind this specific ambush, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the complex security landscape facing West African state forces in their efforts to maintain domestic peace.
