Ghana’s U‑20 Women’s team, the Black Princesses, have qualified for the 2026 FIFA U‑20 Women’s World Cup in Poland after defeating Uganda 3–2 on aggregate in the final round of African qualifiers. The crucial second‑leg 1–1 draw in Uganda on Saturday, May 9, followed a 2–1 home‑leg win at the Accra Sports Stadium, sealed Ghana’s passage to the global tournament.
Key moment: Owusu Ansah’s free‑kick
The Black Princesses had to respond after Uganda opened the scoring in the second leg, but midfielder Linda Owusu Ansah bailed the team out once again, firing in a free‑kick from the 78th minute for her trademark finish. The leveller not only equalised the match but also locked in the 3–2 aggregate win, confirming Ghana’s qualification to Poland.
Eighth World Cup appearance
This marks the Black Princesses’ eighth consecutive appearance at the FIFA U‑20 Women’s World Cup, having previously featured in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2022, and 2024 editions. Their record shows consistent continental strength, with peak results in 2010 and 2014 when they reached the quarterfinals. The team has also become a key talent pipeline for the senior Black Queens, with several graduates going on to anchor the full‑national‑team set‑up.
Ahead of Poland 2026
The 2026 tournament in Poland will feature 24 teams from across the world, giving the Black Princesses another platform to test themselves against top‑tier youth sides. With the qualification secured, focus now turns to squad preparation, tactical shaping, and fine‑tuning the blend of experience and youth that has kept Ghana regularly present at this level of women’s youth football.
