Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has called for unity and trust among the five goalkeepers in camp as they compete for one of three spots in Ghana’s final 26‑man World Cup squad, while also reflecting on his costly error in the 2–0 friendly loss to Mexico.
Asare made a high‑profile mistake just two minutes into the Mexico game, allowing Brian Gutierrez to capitalise and score the opening goal.
The error sparked questions about his place as first‑choice, but Asare remains focused on redemption, insisting that mistakes happen in football and that there are still many matches ahead to prove his worth.
Five goalkeepers are currently in camp, Benjamin Asare, Lawrence Ati‑Zigi, Solomon Agbesi, Joseph Anang and Paul Reverson, with only three expected to make the final squad, which will be announced on June 1.
A new goalkeepers’ trainer has joined the setup, adjusting the department to head coach Carlos Queiroz’s methods, adding another layer to the competition.
Asare stressed that every coach has their own style and tactical approach, and players must adapt, follow instructions and give their best regardless of who starts.
He emphasized collective success, saying that if the coach starts another goalkeeper, it does not mean the “number one” should be angry; instead, the group must stay prayerful, united and focused on helping the Black Stars succeed.
With the Wales friendly on June 2 serving as the final audition before the World Cup, Asare’s aim is to prove his value, earn the trust of fellow Ghanaians, and help the team perform well when they open their Group L campaign against Panama on June 17.
