The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Richard Akpokavie Esq., has indicated that all is set for the committee to resume work on the stalled multi-purpose Olympic stadium project at Amasaman.
Mr Akpokavie made this known during the committee’s annual congress held at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Accra.
Giving an account of his one-year stewardship in office as president of the committee, the renowned lawyer said the GOC board had set up a committee to oversee the commencement of the project.
He said extensive engagements has been made for the resumption of project by the end of June.
He added that failure to commence the project could compel the GOC to refund the amount of $100,000 disbursed to Ghana by ANOCA in support of the project in 2022.
Mr Akpokavie said that, to fast-track the project, a committee headed by Nii Lante Bannerman had been established and had engaged all relevant stakeholders, including the Ga North Municipal Assembly, to ensure work begins on schedule.
He also informed congress that the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr Kofi Adams, had pledged the ministry’s support toward completing the project.
In 2002, the late former Vice-President Aliu Mahama cut the sod for the commencement of the project, which has taken more than 20 years to complete. When completed, it will serve several sporting disciplines under the Ghana Olympic Committee.
The congress was attended by heads of federation under the Ghana Olympic Committee and ten non Olympics federations.
