President Donald Trump has described his meeting with President Xi Jinping as “the summit the world is watching” emphasising the importance of U.S.-China relations and the potential for deeper cooperation between the two global powers.
Speaking at the Great Hall of the People of Beijing on Thursday, May 14, 2026 as part of a three-day state visit to China, President Trump said it was a great honour to pay a state visit and noted that US and China share a significant and influential relationship.
He praised Xi as “a great leader” and expressed deep respect for President Xi and the Chinese people, highlighting the strong personal rapport the two leaders have developed through years of communication and engagement.
President Trump noted that both sides have worked together to address major issues and maintian constructive dailogue despite differences.
He further pledged his commitment to working with President Xi to strengthen communication and cooperation, improve bilateral ties, manage disagreements responsibly and build what he described as “a fantastic future” for both nations.
President Trump noted that as the world’s two most powerful countries, the United States and China have the ability to accomplish “big and good things” not only for their own people, but also for global stability and prosperity.
“The United States and China are the most important and most powerful countries in the world. Together, we can do a lot of big and good things for the two countries and the world…”President Trump said.
President Trump is accompanied by top U.S. executives, including Apple’s Tim Cook, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang and Tesla’s Elon Musk
President Trump and Xi Jinping also exchanged ideas on major international and regional issues including the Middle East situation, the Ukraine crisis and the Korean Peninsula.
President Trump is expected to return to the United States on Friday, May 15, 2026.
