The National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) and the National Accreditation Board (NAB) have notified the public and all stakeholders that the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) is a first degree professional programme.
The two bodies said the programme is not a postgraduate degree and should be classified and treated as such.
This was in a statement jointly signed by Professor Mohammed Salifu and Dr Kingsley Nyarko, the Executive Secretaries of the NCTE and NAB, respectively, and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday.
The statement said the introduction of a six-year Pharm.D programme was approved for the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology on the recommendations of the Pharmacy Council of Ghana, the Ministry of Health and the West Africa Health Organisation (WAHO) in 2016.
It was aimed at harmonising the training of pharmacists internationally and across the West Africa Region as well as enhance the clinical competence of pharmacists in Ghana.
The statement said the Pharm.D programme replaced the previous four-year Bachelor of Pharmacy programme that existed in the country.
