Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander has become the 14th player in NBA history to win the league’s Most Valuable Player award in consecutive seasons, describing the milestone as “special” in his acceptance remarks.

The Oklahoma City Thunder guard captured the 2025–26 MVP with 939 voting points, comfortably ahead of Nikola Jokić (634) and Victor Wembanyama (569).

Why the award is significant

Gilgeous‑Alexander is now one of only 16 players ever to win multiple MVPs and the 14th to do so in back‑to‑back years, joining an elite group including Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Stephen Curry.

In his speech, he reflected on being mentioned alongside those legends, calling it an honour he does not take lightly and thanking the people who have helped shape his career.

MVP season and Thunder’s playoff run

SGA helped lead the Thunder to a top‑seeded 64‑win regular season, averaging around 31 points, 4 rebounds and 6–7 assists while functioning as the undisputed engine of the team.

The defending NBA champions have now advanced to the Western Conference Finals, where they opened the series against the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday, May 19, with Game 1 played in Oklahoma City.
