President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in two new envoys, charging them to promote Ghana’s economic interests and strengthen diplomatic ties with their respective host countries.

The President said the role of ambassadors has evolved beyond diplomacy and protocol to include advancing the country’s economic and strategic interests abroad. He noted that the newly appointed envoys, being career diplomats, already understand the expectations and responsibilities associated with their assignments.

The envoys are Humphrey Chatio Ajongbah, Ambassador to Japan, and McArios Akanbeanab Akanbong, Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

Speaking on Ghana’s relations with Japan, President Mahama highlighted the long-standing diplomatic ties between the two countries, noting that next year marks 70 years of diplomatic relations. He referenced the historic connection through Japanese scientist Hideyo Noguchi, who died in Ghana, as well as Japan’s long-standing development cooperation with Ghana.

The President urged the Ambassador-designate to Japan, Humphrey Chatio Ajongbah, to work towards the successful implementation of key bilateral projects, including the proposed Volivo Bridge over the Southern Volta River and other partnership agreements between the two countries.

On Ethiopia, President Mahama described Addis Ababa as the diplomatic capital of Africa and noted that Ghana’s upcoming role as Chair of the African Union would place significant responsibilities on the country’s mission there.

He explained that Ghana is currently First Vice Chair of the AU Bureau and has been nominated unopposed by Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, to assume the AU Chairmanship when it becomes West Africa’s turn.

President Mahama expressed confidence in the two envoys and wished them success in their new diplomatic assignments.
